Listing of Traditional Latin Masses Which Have Been
Approved Under Papal Authority.
-- REPUBLIC OF
ALBANIA --
There are no traditional latin masses in Albania. The Apostolic Vicariate of the tiny
Byzantine Rite Church was perhaps the smallest one in Eastern Europe, having only about
400 subjects when it was completely dispersed by the communists in 1946. (It should not be
confused with the Italo-Albanian or 'Albanese' Byzantine Church in Italy, which has never
been separated from Roman jurisdiction.) It was restored by Pope John Paul II in 1991 at
the Port of Durrės. The Byzantine Catholic community is situated mostly in or near the
Town of Elbasan.
