PUISSANCE

Puissance...the Nordic industrial masters... Dedicated to destruction, misanthropy, and an end to all life forms... Trumpeting their message of demise through their sometimes harsh, and sometimes beautiful orchestral messages. Here Henry Moller expresses his fiery lust for obliteration...

Puissance is another of the COLD MEAT INDUSTRY bands with a direct link to the Black Metal scene. While the role of F.Soderlund is well established in a number of BM bands, that of Henry Moller is a tad more mysterious. I wonder if at the birth of Puissance, it was conceived that Puissance could breakthrough into this scene, and if that was important to the band, or just an additional bonus if it did happen?

We didn't consider that at the time, so I guess it must be considered as a bonus, or perhaps a punishment. We can't really be bothered with all the scenes and the origins and followers.

It appears that the BM scene is becoming far more interested in both industrial, ambient and noise oriented music. Why do you feel this is so? Many metal types do not even accept various forms of metal, so what would make the more sinister bands of the Cold Meat Empire appealing to these people?

BM and industrial are two utterly extreme musicforms with nearly the same destructive and powerful atmosphere, often dealing with the same subjects so I don't think it's that strange that alot of people and labels from both sides are linked together. As the ideology and valuation are similar, I suppose the serious BM people have far more in common with the industrial people than with ordinary metal beings. As the BM scene is infected with thousands of unqualified bands nowdays, and only a few bands are progressing, the scene becomes stagnant. The industrial scene on the other hand has a bigger potential perhaps not on the commercial side, but this music form is much more extensive. (And I suggest that one must be serious to engage in all the equipment to create convincing industrial also... ED)

Puissance deal with primary themes of destruction depopulisation of the earth... While these intentions appear to be quite broad in their capacities, have you found them becoming more refined, and more specific, as opposed to being total destruction?

Well we don't want the world to be depopulised as this will not solve the problems. There will still be living beings in one form or another. We want to see this planet in dust. We are against all forms of life.

Do you recall a time when you developed this lust for destruction, and a hatred towards the human race? Is there any singular event that you can recall that led you down this path?

No, it was more of a gradual development of enlightenment that went on for the larger part of my life. I think it mainly has to do with accepting what the human race is all about, and once you do, there is not much more you can do but despise them.

Could you express 3 major paths of destruction that the planet would endure, if you were in such a position to command the end of the earth as we know it?

Why? I don't want the planet to endure the destruction we proclaim, we want the apocalypse to be a total devastation of the entire world and that afterwards there should be no trace of life ever existing.

What are your views on suicide? Many claim it is for the weak, and those who cannot endure the trials of life? I imagine that you must be prepared to die, with your lust for the end of this mortal realm?

Suicide might be a good way to solve personal problems, but it's hardly very constructive. But generally speaking, I have nothing against it.

For you personally, is it better to die by your own hand, than by that of another...be that by an individual, or so called catastrophe?

It depends on whether you just blow your head off, or you try to take as many as you can with you in the process. I would gladly be the victim of a catastrophe if it just takes the rest of the world with it.

Krig (War) was the title of the first demo, which was delayed for over a year, due to some alleged church fires or something... Is it more than coincidence that a photo of a church, lit up in all of its midnight glory happened to wind up on the cover of the latest MZ.412 album, with a thankyou to a certain Mr. Henry Moller?

Yes, they know each other quite well, and apparently have some hobbies in common...

The subject of church burning has been brought up an indiscriminate number of times, and this will be yet another. Having covered this a number of times with Norwegians, it appears that their intentions for this act were one of revenge against their christian invaders (a purification of the land...) who destroyed the pagan temples of their forefathers. The Swedes do possess the same Viking heritage, tho' I wonder if the intention for Puissance to destroy a church, would be for no other reason than to incite terror, and violence upon the christian race. Is this so?

If we were to burn something it would probably not be a philosophical statement, but rather something for amusement...

Between the Krig, and Obey Hate Die demos, there seemed to be a transition that led Puissance to their present day orchestrations. A deal of the harsh industrial parts have been curbed, and a more instrument oriented scheme has been introduced. Why did it happen this way?

We thought it was more attractive at the time, and easier to show our capacity with these orchestrations, and marches than stagnate with these dark industrial tracks, but I think we've showed on our our debut album that a mix between these elements is an excellent combination and we will continue with this concept on our next album.

Could it have anything to do with the end of the world being presented as a majestic and almost beautiful event? If you are willing to present the final battle as a musical score, I think this would be ideal for those, who are not riddled with fear for this forthcoming Armageddon.

Yes. (Hmmm...ED)

A great deal of Let Us Lead (tracks 2 through 4) have a similar theme in the way they were orchestrated. Why to break them up? Was it not tempting to have this piece work as a large body, or were the themes too varied to run as one solid body?

If we were that narrowminded and wanted to create Let Us Lead in one night, we had used the same instruments through the eight tracks. But as we have bigger expectations of ourselves, we tried to make every track as personal as possible, which I believe is the key to make an album interesting after ten times of listening. It's really sad to see bands who build all their tracks exactly the same, I mean, how could you progress then?

I hear a great deal of classical inspiration during the course of Let Us Lead. Am I correct in this assumption? I feel that many composers created music, that whilst being hailed by many ordinary types of people as enjoyable, and pleasurable, was at the same time tyrannical, explosive, and symbolic of tragedy, death, and war...all the things that people are generally repulsed by. What are your thoughts?

-

(Yes that's Henry's answer...'-' I wonder if it warranted a little more than just '-'? ED)

Dance In The Sulpur Garden has a subtle ambience to it, and does not really convey death in an audial sense. Is this something you do try to accomplish...creating music that projects the message in the title. The only way I could perceive this, is as if you are projecting your images of death and dying as beautiful, and tragic events... Is this so?

Maybe not tragic, but certainly beautiful.

Other works such as Burn The Earth, and March Of The Puissant have a militaristic aura to them. What are your thoughts on a militaristic involvment in the final battle to cleanse the earth of life? Is it not a bit too ordered and organised? Should destruction be achieved through chaos, and the total breakdown of society and its values?

We prefer to achieve the final solution in an organised way, see us as a pro militaristic band, not as anarchistic. When you are using a military movement, you are doing something active, instead of just looking at the misery which certainly will take alot more time. Anyway, the main point is that something happens, not how it happens.

If all a person was to feel is hatred, why would they care enough to release their treasured orchestrations upon those they hate the most(i.e. people)? Why supply people with a preview of the end, when they are seen only in light of their potential for destruction?

Does it really matter whether they hear this so called preview or not, (Why give pleasure to people when you wish to see them destroyed... ED) although it is amusing to see people react and try to interpret contraversial like for instance our Let Us Lead.
(The point missed or simply ignored? ED)

What of the future of Puissance? Will there be any more hymns unleashed, and do you feel that other avenues of experimentation will manifest themselves in these releases?

We've just started the recording of our second album, supposed to be called Back In Control. And as always, we're trying our best to make something truly unique and even more powerful. We have just invested in a lot of new equipment so we're definately prepared. I think some of the tracks are going to be more industrial based and the orchestral parts will be more grander than anything before. So the question is how long it will take to create this album. Well, we will see, but you can expect to see it sometime '97.

Thanx for answering the interview. Is there anything you wish to say in conclusion?

There is no future, not for the world, environment, us, you or anyone else. This is a truth that is very obvious if you just care to look beyond the mass media lies that tell us for instance that the ozone layer has started to heal itself, or that the rainforests have started to grow back all of a sudden and really aren't threatened at all. These lies are of course created by the media to please the public, because the public can only handle trouble as long as it cannot possibly affect them directly. Therefore the media must lie, because they can't allow that their customers (the public) to get upset with their sponsers or employers. Most news are controlled by a very small number of international 'news bureaus' owned by an even smaller number of very large companies, and this is what makes the manipulation of news on a global basis possible. Personally, I don't think that the public would react even if they did know the truth about what we have to look forward to, because the public consists mainly of apathetic fools who wouldn't know what to do anyway. People in general have no power or ability to get organised, especially without a strong leader, and we all know how wrong it would be to be involved in any organisation that isn't based on a democatic system, and the concept of a democratic revolution is pretty unbelievable. Even if people would find someone to lead them in their futile struggle, he would probably not be on the public's side for very long, because leaders can always be bought. Look at the USA for instance.
Well back to the real issue, because this is supposed to be information about what we believe and stand for. As I stated earlier, we have no hope whatsoever for this planet, the reason for that is this... The environment is practically unsavable, the health of mother nature has deteriorated so much that almost every child that is born becomes allergic to at least a few of our most common foods or plants. Even if we were to stop all polution today, the environment would still get worse and worse for at least thirty more years. This leads me to believe that to hope for the recovery of our nature is futile.
All great civilisations (for example the Egyptians or the Inkas) have destroyed themselves in the end and nothing has yet convinced me that we won't do the same. On the contrary, I am pretty convinced that we will, and if you just open your eyes and look around you will find alot of evidence, for instance the pollution that I believe I have already mentioned, but most of all I feel that the human mind is far too self centred to create a civilisation in which all people can coexist and live in peace. We are all greedy, and we want to have control over our own lives, the phenomenon that we have chosen to call civilised society is itself an impossible concept. A community that tries to please all people is of course bound to end up letting everybody down, because there is no possibility of providing a lifestyle that is suitable for everyone.
We all have different needs that are often restricted by laws that are made to protect people that we often don't have any desire to associate with. All these laws that are supposedly there to protect our freedom are in fact a restriction of our personal freedom and that is of course a very important factor when one wants to understand the reason for our greed and our lust for power. The truth is that the reason is a very simple one. In order to gain freedom, you have to be rich or powerful enough, because if society can't afford to lose you, it means you can do almost anything you want, and get away with it. I feel it is important to understand that the ones who write the laws are often the most perverted and even the ones most likely to break them, and that I do not feel that this is wrong of course, but it also means that I haven't got very much trust or hope in us ever reaching a functional justice system, or even a functional society.
But I don't want our leaders to run us into the ground. I want to do it myself. I want to be one of those who ends the history of mankind, because there is a shortcut reach recognition, and that is terrorism. Anyway, this is the reason we do no respect or trust anyone, we simply feel that all the people on this disgusting planet are so false, unreliable and hypocritical that they should all be terminated. We have yet to find a single person that we can rely on or trust in any way, not even among the people that we spend alot of time with (please note that we do not refer to them as friends). People in general have no spiritual or intellectual ambition whatsoever, and those who claim that they do, are usually stupid enough to claim that life on earth can change for the better. If someone even thinks about trying to save this world, it must be considered one of the ultimate acts of stupidity. However there are actually some people who believe that survival is possible, but their only reason for believing this is usually that we might be able to save the earth if we all work side by side and help each other.
We have only one thing to say to people like that... We will not now, nor will we ever help you save anyhthing or anyone, we despise all living creatures and we want you dead. We do not want to save you, we want to destroy you.
