March is the month of wild weather swings and the transition to Spring.
Spring is the time of renewed hope and vigor. The time of first planting and of the lean days of winter's telling. The sun is climbing toward its highest course and leaves are budding anew on trees and in fields.
The children's top seems to have been a carry-over from Pagan days when the spinning cone may have represented the sun's ascendancy.
Dates in March:
1 March: Dydd Dewi Sant.
St. David's Day, patron saint of Wales. Leeks and daffodils are appropriate
symbols for this day.
17 March: St. Patrick's Day. Wear the green! Or orange if a Protestant. St. Patrick was a missionary to Ireland to convert the people to the Roman Catholic ways.
20 March: The Vernal Equinox - one of two days when the hours of daylight and darkness are equal. The first day of Spring.
In most Christian churches, Lent encompasses the entire month of March this year, with Easter falling on 15 April.
