'Survival of the Fittest' | 'A Maiden's Grave' | 'Falsely Accused' | 'Kept Boy' |
'Dirt' | 'A Thin Dark Line' | 'Unnatural Exposure' | 'Ghosts' |
Genre: mystery
Basic premise: An ex-assistant DA, and her lawyer husband find ways of defending the innocent. He with the courts, she with a glass eye, a gun and a mastiff.
Review: Good story. This is number 8 in the Butch Karp/Marlene Ciampi series, and hopefully, not the last. They have an honest husand and wife relationship that not even the bad guys can destroy.
Rating: * * * *
My opinion: This is a 'must-read' for anyone who likes stong female roles, with a splash of humor for good measure.
'A Maiden's Grave' by Jeffery Deaver
Genre: Mystery
Basic Premise: A group of hearing-impaired students and their teachers are kidnapped by escaped murderers. The FBI sends in its senior hostage negotiator to rescue the women.
Review: Very well written. It started off a bit slowly, but soon picked up and by the end of the book I was cheering for the good guys and chewing on my fingernails.
Rating: * * *
My opinion: While not earth-shattering great fiction, 'A Maiden's Grave' is a book that will while away the hours and leave you satisfied.
'Kept Boy' by Robert Rodi
Genre: Fiction
Basic Premise: A 32 year old man is worried about his position in the household of his much-older, rich lover.
Review: Amusing. Mr. Rodi has a keen wit, and a willingness to poke fun at a lifestyle that is slightly 'over the top'. A good old-fashioned love story.
Rating: * * *
My opinion: If you aren't homophobic (less sex in here than in a standard gothic), you will enjoy this.
'Dirt' by Stuart Wood
Genre: mystery
Basic Premise: Someone is spilling the dirt on a not-so-popular gossip writer and she hires ex-cop and lawyer Stone Barrington to find the culprit.
Review: A good mystery saves a few surprises for the end--so I would call this a good mystery. A good way to spend a cold winter evening.
Rating: * * * *
My opinion: The latest in a series of Stone Barrington mysteries--each getting better than the last.
'Unnatural Exposure' by Patricia Cornwell
Genre: mystery
Basic Premise: Mysterious deaths in Ireland and Virginia appear to be by the same person, along with an unknown disease.
Review: Cornwell is a good writer, with a wonderful use of vision and perspective. Very good book to take to the beach this summer.
Rating: * * * ½
My opinion: The next in the Kay Scarpetta series, (she is the chief medical examiner in Virginia) and it will keep you guessing to the very end.
'Ghosts' by Noel Hynd
Genre: supernatural
Basic Premise: Nantucket Island--peaceful, idyllic, quiet. Or is it?
Review: Enter a world where wallpaper comes alive, where reality is subjective and where ghosts walk freely.
Rating: * * *
My opinion: I enjoy ghost stories and this one had me shivering by the time I finished. Read it during the day, with the lights on.
'A Thin Dark Line' by Tami Hoag
Genre: mystery
Basic Premise: Louisiana bayous' are stalked by a killer--and the man suspected has been set free.
Review: Tami Hoag loves the Louisiana bayou area, and her love for it shows in her writing. Wonderful images will leave you hearing alligators in your bathtub.
Rating: * * *
My opinion: A good book, although not one of her best. An interesting read, with a few twists along the way.
'Survival of the Fittest' by Johnathan Kellerman
Genre: mystery
Basic Premise: Someone is killing retarded children in LA, and it is Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis to the rescue.
Review: Alex, a psychologist, and Milo, a detective, are once again after the bad guy. Wonderful pairing of minds.
Rating: * * *
My opinion: Another of Kellerman's better books. If you want a book to keep you guessing until the very end, turn up the fire and enjoy yourself with this new release.
