6/19/2000 The Truth of the Matter 2... Weddings and Leavings

Dear Friends and Family,

Well, it's about 1pm here in Riddle, Oregon, and I'm about ready to leave. I finished my immunizations this morning and checked my checklist one more time as I packed my pack. From here on out, I've got nothing except what's in there.

The wedding went well, and my sister is now Mrs. Karl Thompson. It hasn't really hit me yet, and I suppose it might not ever. There wasn't much crying at all, even from my mother .

I am very happy for the new couple, and I think they will do well. After his little trial of the night before, I'm sure Karl is a really great guy, and I'm glad to have him as a brother.

With all the hubub around here I didn't make much progress on my French, although I have a little bit better grasp of pronunciation and the most basic phrases. I did manage to do quite a bit of hiking with my loaded pack, which is probably up to 35 lbs. It's actually quite comfortable.

It's kind of hard to leave. I'm planning to hitchhike to Fresno, and since I'm getting a late start it may be Riddle to Sacramento to Fresno. I hope it goes well. I've only hitchhiked a few times before.

I hope to write again before leaving Fresno, and since the wedding I'm attending there is on the 23rd, that's probably when I'll be flying.

Au revoir

-Dustin
