City Hall rooms are numbered sequentially
from 0 to 99 in a clockwise direction. Starting and ending at the tower
and prefixed by the floor number, odd numbered rooms are on the courtyard
side of the corridor and even numbers are opposite on the building's perimeter.
With four symetrical sides, and four quadrents, it relativly easy to get
a general idea where a particular room is - ie. Room #554 is most likely
on the 5th floor of the building on the south side facing the street.
Entrances and elevators are located at each corner of the building. There
are also handicapped accessable entrances at the East, South, and West
Portals.
Over 50% of City
Hall's space belongs to the First Judicial Court of Common Pleas.
Much of this space is currently unused as the trial division of Common
Pleas court moved into a new Criminal Justice Center across the street
in December 1996. It is expected that the vacant courtrooms in City Hall
will eventually be utilized by civil courts currently housed in several
different buildings around the city.
Office space in City Hall has historically been somewhat dynamic, as departments move in and out. The building was originally designed for the executive, leglislative, and judicial branches of Philadelphia City government, but spaces within the building also house other city services. This directory is the most current available and should be relativly accurate.
