The city of Ummuofia had many who believed in the strong power of medicine. The medicine has the control of wars. The people felt powerful with the strong medicine but, knew they were powerless over it. On page eleven it says the medicine was an old woman with one leg. She was described as old as in wise and experienced, and one-legged because she, the medicine, is always hopping around.

The people of Umuofia believed that the ancient silk-cotton tree was sacred. The tree gave these people strength in belief and in faith.
