Interdisciplinary Connections Assignment

      As our introductory activities have shown, no subject or work is an island existing in isolation. Literature, as well as other disciplines, is influenced by and influences other fields of inquiry. During this semester you will identify some of these influences as well as develop connections between various disciplines in relation to the literature we study.

      Assignment:

      1. During each six (6) weeks time period you will identify a specific connection with a piece of literature studied in class and a creation or theory in each of several other disciplines.
      2. Complete within three (3) days of completing a literary work:
          1. 1 page analysis of the connection between the literature and a content area - 50 points
          2. Annotated bibliography of sources - 10 points
          3. Presentation to the class of connection - 15 points
      3. Each discipline can only be used once within a six (6) weeks. All disciplines must be covered each six (6) weeks.
      4. Essay - Analysis of connections, citing examples from three (3) other students' findings throughout the semester. Due two (2) weeks before finals. 100 points
      5. Bonus - Submit 1 page analysis, annotated bibliography, and appropriate Internet links as a Web page in addition to the hard copy. 5 points each submission.

      Disciplines:

      • Math/science - algebra, geometry, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, etc.
      • Literature - novel, short story, drama, poetry, nonfiction, etc.
      • Art - painting, sculpture, photography, etc.
      • Music - classical, modern, instrumental, vocal, etc.
      • Religion/philosophy
      • Social studies - political events of the time, relations among humanity
