Act II, Scene ii
(Rome. Caesar's house. Caesar enters in his nightgown. The storm still rages.)
Caesar: Nothing has been calm tonight. Calpurnia has cried out three times in her sleep, "Help, they are murdering Caesar!" [To servant] Who's that?
Servant: Sir?
Caesar: Ask the priest to make a quick sacrifice, and tell me the results.
Servant: Yes, sir. [Exit]
Calpurnia: What are you thinking, Caesar? Are you pondering of going out. You shouldn't leave the house today.
Caesar: I will go forth. Things that try to hurt me I will ignore. And when I turn around hey shall be gone.
Calpurnia: Caesar, I've never paid attention to omens before, but I am frighten by them now. We have heard and seen many omens today, and now I am afraid.
Caesar: Can we avoid the intentions of the gods. I shall go forth because the predictions apply to the rest of the world as much as they do to Caesar.
Calpurnia: When beggars die it doesn't matter to the world around them, because it doesn't change anything. But when a prince dies all hell breaks loose.
Caesar: Cowards die many times, but the valiant only die once. It seems strange to me that men would fear the coming of their death. [Enter Servant] What did the priests say?
Calpurnia: You are being arrogant. Don't go out today. If it's because of your own pride that you must go then say it's my fault you won't go. We'll send Mark Antony in your place. I'm begging you, please.
Caesar: We will send Mark Antony to say I'm sick, so for you I will stay home. [Enter Decius] Here's Decius, he'll tell them.
Decius: Hail, Caesar. Good morning, good sir. I've come to take you to the Senate.
Caesar: You came at a good time. Tell the senators I said hey, and that I will not come today.
Calpurnia: Say he's sick.
Caesar: Should I lie? I'm not scared of the senators. Don't tell them I'm sick. Simply tell them I will not come.
Decius: Tell me why, or they'll laugh at me.
Caesar: It's because of my will: I will not come. That should be enough. But I'll tell you privately. Calpurnis wants me to stay here. She thinks something horrible is going to happen to me. She begged me.
Decius: She misinter pretend her dream. You shall be loved by your servants, and they will take pride in wearing your badge.
Caesar: You have explained it well.
Decius: I know I have. You have to come. They want to give you the crown. If you don't come they may change their minds. You have to come to advance you career. My judgment isn't as strong as my love for you.
Caesar: Calpurnia your fear is foolish. I am ashamed I fell for them. Give me my toga so I can go. [Enter Brutus, Ligarius, Metellus Cimber, Trebonius, Cinna, and Publius]
Publius: Good day, Caesar.
Caesar: Welcome, Publius. Brutus, why are you up so early? Good day, Casca. Caius Ligarius, I'm your friend. What time is it?
Brutus: It's is eight o'clock.
Caesar: Thank you. [Enter Antony] Look! Antony is here.
Antony: Hello, most noble Caesar.
Caesar: Get them something to drink. Cinna, Matellus, Trebonius, I have to talk to you. Come near so I may remember you.
Trebonius: Caesar, I will [aside] I'll be so close your best friends will have wished I was farther.
Caesar: Friends, come with me to have some wine. Now, let's go together as friends.
Brutus: [Aside] People who seem to be friends may actually be enemies. I am sorrowful just thinking about it.
