1) Minutes Approved.
2) Boxing Club – Jon reports: he’s researching boxing, martial arts, and kickboxing. Safety is at issue. There was talk about getting an instructor, and Aaron voiced concerns over liability and safety.
3) Darkroom – tabled. Bernadette still needs to contact Carol about the equipment.
4) Mascot – suggested we combine several of favorite mascot choices into one mascot. Also, Butterfly was added to the growing list. A motion was made and passed to wait till next week to vote on a mascot, using the similar process we used to choose our name. (This would be for people to write their three favorite choices on a ballot, and the mascot selected according to a weighted scale.) We decided colors may depend on the mascot chosen.
5) School name – Aaron proposed we change the name from Carolina School for Independent Learning to Carolina School for Interdependent Learning. A brief discussion ensued, and the motion was carried.
6) Location – Aaron, Robin, Carol, Anjali, and Bernadette visited Paula’s farm. There were positive responses about Paula’s land, animals, and Paula herself. The land has four buildings that we could use, though all need renovation. A cinder-block building on a concrete slab, half a barn, a tool-shed that could be used as a woodshop, and a garage with a large room above. The land is 17 miles from Willow Creek. A question arose about septic – we would have to test if the land is able to handle a tank. Aaron’s visiting Friday morning to discuss this and other details with Paula. We’ll also tentatively plan a group visit next Wednesday about 4 or 5, if Paula agrees. The discussion digressed at this point, from a suggestion that we use someone’s home for the first year, and into a question about being a home school group rather than a private school. This was tabled for next week’s meeting.
7) Camping trip – Kim said we could camp at Wilson College in Asheville, if we were to plan a visit to see the college at that time. Other options suggested: Jordan Lake, Robin’s woods, mountains, Haw River. A committee was formed to plan the trip for June 4-6, covering the place, cost, etc. Anjali and Bernadette head this committee.
8) There is a protest against a new nuclear power plant in Orange County Thursday at 10 AM. See Anjali for details.
9) Year-round? This item was tabled for the Policy discussion group.
10) Passed a motion to adjourn, tabling remaining items till next meeting.
