Grammar Notes: |
Run-on sentences result when two complete sentences (independent
clauses) are joined with either no punctuation or only a comma. This
makes it very confusing for the reader.
Run-on: Neil finished off the tub of ice cream, then he ate the
bag of cookies.
Solutions:
- Separate the two clauses into sentences like in the example below.
- Use a coordinate conjunction to connect two independent clauses.
- Use a subordinate conjunction to make one of the clauses dependent.
Examples:
- Neil finished off the tub of icecream. Then he ate the bag of cookies.
- Neil finished off the tub of icecream, and then he ate the bag of cookies.
- After Neil finished off the tub of icecream, he ate the bag of cookies.
Special Case
In this assignment you will practise using coordinate and subordinate conjunctions to connect clauses and to correct run-on sentence errors.
Among coordinate conjunctions there is one special case of which you should be aware: nor. **Use question word order with nor.
Examples
- Mary plays the flute, but she doesn't play the piccolo.
- She practices hard, so she is improving her flute playing quickly.
- She does not play the piccolo, nor does she want to play the piccolo.
