Writing

Choose one of the following two writing topics.

  1. Being on time is quite important in Canadian culture. It is impolite to make someone wait for you for very long. In Japan it is perhaps even more important. It is a question of personal honour. How would you compare the importance of being on time in Canadian culture with that in your home country? Do you think Canadians are too stressed about time? Include some examples to help explain your views.
  2. Nobody wants to get hurt. That's obvious! Most of us try to be careful of safety issues in whatever we do. However, most of us also want to have fun. We want excitement. This often means taking risks, sometimes risks to our safety.

Write about your thoughts and ideas about safety. The following questions are meant to stimulate your thinking.

If we are always so careful about our safety, how can we have any fun? On the other hand, if we are not careful, it can result in serious and permanent injury, and could even cost us our life. What are your thoughts on this issue? Should a young person try to balance safety and excitement? How can he or she do this? Should he or she worry at all about safety? What are the most dangerous things you do (or have done) for fun? Why do (did) you do these things? Will you do these things when you are older?
