ordinary

          I have lost
          my knowledge of the everlasting
          & I cast meager shadows
(they look like shadows now, nothing more)

          & I am half-past thirty-one.
I have been taught to care
          & not to care.

          I have been taught that
          I am
          & that I am commonplace,

          & the bitter surrender
          of a thousand different meanings
          falls upon my fatherhood
& whirls me deep into an ordinary bed.
