News. February 1, 2003 The shuttle astronauts aboard Columbia died today as they were preparing to land. Thomas and James Amberg had visited Kennedy Space Center in Florida January 8th, 2003. Here are some photos and stories from their visit. Shuttle Columbia on the Launch Pad. A supportive gantry blocks the view of the shuttle. You can see the orange tip of the rocket peeking over the gantry. Here is a picture of a shuttle model from the same view as the previous photos. About 8 hours before lift off the gantry swings back exposing the shuttle. The closest view points for lift off are 3 miles from the launch pad.
The shuttle is assembled in this building. This is the second largest building (by volume) in the world. Each stripe on the flag is as wide as a lane on the highway. The 2 darks areas we face are doors that open when assembly is complete. At Kennedy Space Center they have a model of the shuttle you can explore. You can barely see in this photo the individual number on each of the heat resistant tiles. Here is the front edge of the shuttle wing. The cargo bay on the shuttle. This is a model of a satellite that could be launched from the cargo bay. The Shuttle cockpit seats two. This the astronaut memorial It symbolizes a large mirror that reflects up to heaven. I was impressed by the number of blank black squares. They must all know the danger they face when traveling in space. NASA has anticipated that death can't always be prevented, so they are prepared to honor many future heroes.
Thank you, Heroes.
