The Human Body: An
Orientation
When you finish this chapter you should be able to:
- Define anatomy and physiology and describe the subdivisions of anatomy.
- Name (in order of increasing complexity) the different levels of structural organization that make up the human body, and explain their relationships.
- List the 11 organ systems and 1 functional system of the body and briefly explain the major function(s) of each system.
- List the functional characteristics common to humans (and other organisms) and explain the importance of each to maintaining life.
- List the survival needs of the body.
- Define homeostasis and explain its importance.
- Define negative feedback and describe its role in maintaining body homeostasis.
- Define positive feedback and explain why it usually causes homeostatic
imbalance. Also note specific situations in which it contributes to homeostasis, or normal body function.
- Describe the anatomical position.
- Use correct anatomical terminology to describe body directions, regions, and body planes or sections.
- Locate the major body cavities, name their subdivisions, and list the major organs in each cavity or subdivision.
- Name the specific serous membranes and note their common function.
- Name the nine regions or four quadrants of the abdominopelvic cavity and list the organs they contain. .
