NORSE MYTHOLOGY

ODIN

Odin was the head of the Viking gods. He had descended from the giant Buri. He made his home a city called Asgard. He was married to the goddess Frigg, but he couted other goddesses. He was the first and foremost god of war, but was also god of wisdom, poetry and magic. In battle he wore a horned helmet of gold, a breastplate abd a belt that increased his strength vy ten times when needed. He also had Gungner, a magical spear which threw thunder bolts. He was accompanied by two giant wolves and thirteen beautiful warrior maidens, known as the Valkyries

Odin had two ravens, Hugin and Mugin (thought and memory) who flew over the earth and returned at dusk to report to Odin what was happening on earth. In one story, to have a drink from the Fountain of Wisdom, Odin gave one of his eyes to the guardian of the fountain, Mimir. He came to have knowledge that no other god had.

In the Battle of Ragnarok (doom of the gods, pronounced RAGnarock), Odin was snapped up by the giant wolf Fenrir, just as an oracle had foretold. Unlike some gods, Odin never returned and remained gone forever.
