Alanis, Chantal win top Junos

TORONTO -- Chantal Kreviazuk, Alanis Morissette, Matthew Good Band and Shania Twain were all Juno double-honorees this weekend, but the most surprising award at last night's SkyDome extravaganza was for best new group.

The Montreal duo Sky's honor as Canada's top new act comes just weeks after they revealed to JAM! Music they had split, after only one record. It's believed to be the first time a Juno for most promising act has gone to a group that has already broken up.

James (Jay) Renald and Antoine Sicotte, who enjoyed chart-topping success with their debut album "Piece Of Paradise," went their separate ways -- with Renault citing his dissatisfaction with life in the spotlight.

"Each time there is a death, there is also a birth," Sicotte said backstage after accepting the award, adding that his new group, Nice, is already working on new material.

Sicotte acknowledged the irony of winning as best new group after the band had fallen apart, but said he felt helpless about Renald's choice.

"I didn't have anything to do with this (breakup). I'm just dealing with the situation the same way everyone else does. There's a certain sadness, but I had to respect the choice of my partner. He really seemed miserable and it created a lot of anxiety for him. He seems to be happier," he said of Renald, adding the two may continue writing music together.
