Definition: An ordinary differential equation is an equation relating an unknown function of one variable to one or more functions of its derivatives.

A partial differential equation is an equation that involves partial derivatives.

The order of the differential equation is the order of the highest derivative of the unknown function (dependent variable) that appears in the equation.

A solution of a differential equation with independent variable x, is a function that satisfies the differential equation

for all values of x of interest.
