The breaking of the Karmic Bondage of birth and death or alleviation of pain , suffering and misery is attempted in several ways like:
Virtuous Deeds
Based on the evidence and insight that the evil ends in pain , ignominy , suffering and deprivation, the people attempt to follow the path of virtue and righteousness. However this does involve understanding of right and wrong , ethical and unethical, do-able and avoidable.
Austerity
Based on perception and belief that indulgence in luxuries and enjoyment of
various objects of senses leads to embarassment to the soul and leads to downward path to misery , disease sickness and death , people deny themselves the pleasures of senses . Some religions promise compensation by way of eternal enjoyment of the sensuous in some place after death or on the day of judgement.
Deeds of Public Good
Based on promise of happy fruits of our actions that lessen the suffering of others, people undertake charitable and philathropic deeds for the welfare of fellow beings or beings of any species.
All the acts of the above disposition fall within the domain of an awareness of the karmic cycle of action fruits and actions. They also are urged by the desire to avoid pain and to gain happiness and well being. They do not hit on the primary cause of the painful cycle namely the desire to avoid pain and to seek joy , comfort and happiness which in its subtle forms as vasna or as sanskar binds and chains us to the bondage cycle of birth and its concomitant pain and pleasure. This is attempted in some of the following ways:
Seeking Forgiveness
Some are told to seek forgiveness or mercy of God. While God is Love and is merciful and listens to prayers HE is always just in dispensation of awards for actions. Indeed He cannot be merciful without being just and vice versa. The seeking of forgiveness may prevent one from acting likewise in future but it does not free him from operation of justice as per karmic principle. God's mercy operates in protecting you from committing evil and wicked deeds in action, thoughts or speech.
Surrender to God
Personal Accouuntability
1. In the first instance one holds oneself accountable for one's actions and accepts the fruits thereof without attributing the consequences arising from evil or injustice in others.
Acceptance of God's supreme Powers , Energies and Knowledge
2. Accept that God has immense , infinite and immeasurable capacity, capability and competence. Recognise His omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, immanence, power to create , support , and destroy, etc. He is eternal . He is just and merciful. And above all feel that He loves us.
Accept own Helplessness
3. Accept that one is ignorant , incapable of understanding why he suffers ,is deprived, feels inadequate , weak and supportless.
Seeking God's Help
4. Surrenders to God seeking His shelter, support, knowledge, power and ability to impart, promote and grow the right qualities for the desired outcome of this world or for the ultimate emancipation.
Desireless Work
There is no actionlessness and there is no action without an associated desire. An action done without the desire for fruit, done without attachment to its outcome , or ego without ego stamping Iness or mineness, the subtle imprints of action , namely its sanskaar or vaasana will not be created. If 'i'-ness or attachment is not embedded with this subtle form , it will not be possible for the sanskaar to be stirred for prompting to act likewise . The action will vanish with merely the fruit thereof without creating subtle impressionns that place us on the cycle of life and death.
