My Personal God I personalize God because, well, that’s how He presents Himself to me. I do not feel special. I do not feel as if He has singled me out for this type of relationship. I believe God seeks and desires to have this relationship with every person. I feel that God does not want to be in a religion with you, He wants to be in a relationship with you. Accepting this concept of a personal God and a personal Jesus may challenge your concept of God. Every religion, faith, and church I have encountered and experienced has stated that God does this or God does that and we must worship God in only a certain way and that God does not do this or He won’t do that. I say, “Why not?” If God is God, can’t He do anything? Aren’t we placing limits on what God can or cannot do by saying He must act in a certain way? Isn’t this saying that God is less than God and that He must obey what some man or woman has said or written about Him? When it comes to a choice of what some person is telling me and what God is telling me, I choose God. I believe that God speaks with each person every day, all the time. It is only that we have forgotten how to listen. In addition, our churches, temples, mosques, faiths and religions have all erected barriers and walls between God and the person. God does not speak to only certain people. Nor did He stop speaking to modern man. He is God, and He is still speaking. But our faiths and religions all require God to speak to some leader or prophet or holy person and prevent Him from talking to the individual. Well, they try. But it doesn’t work, because God is right here telling you how it is; we just aren’t listening. And we aren’t listening because the church, faith or religion tells us not to. “God doesn’t do that” they say. God desires an intimate, personal, one on one relationship with each person. And it is only religion, dogma, ritual or our own limited beliefs that stand in the way of that relationship. God does not need anything from us. God does not require that we worship Him in any particular way. God does not require that we do anything! God is God and already has everything He needs, wants or desires. God already owns everything and we are just custodians of those things He has given us. God does not need us to perform any ritual, recite any particular prayer, perform any type of movement, travel to any place, or do anything to worship Him. God requires only, that if we so choose, we be honest, bold and follow that path He has set out for us. We worship and honor God by doing that thing He has set in our heart. God has planted a certain unique dream in each person’s heart. To help that person fulfill that dream, God has also provided a talent or talents that will help that person in following that dream. Following this dream of God’s is our purpose in life and following it will bring us inestimable joy. Not following it can bring heartache, misery, an emptiness within, addictions, illnesses and disease, poverty, unfulfillment, disenchantment, bitterness, pain sorrow, anger, envy, jealousy, envy, scarcity, lack, poor judgment and poor relationships. We look to God to make us happy, to answer our prayers and heal our diseases. We call upon God for help and to solve our problems. For many, this prayer, call or cry seems to go unanswered. But God always answers our call. God always answers our prayers. God is always prepared to help when we ask. The only thing that stands in God’s way is our own limited perceptions of how God will help and what form that help will take. When we allow our religions and dogmas to dictate to God how God may help us, we miss out on the help God is providing when God provides the answer in a different way. Sometimes, the answer from God comes from within. That is because God lives within you. He speaks to you from your heart. If you are having trouble with school, work or career; if you are having trouble with spouse, children or health; if you are having trouble with family, friends or finances, then call upon God, but listen for the answer! And that answer may very well come from within! It may come as a hunch. It may come as a feeling. It may come as an overheard conversation, as a recognition of something you hear on the radio or TV, something you see or hear on the internet, a text message sent by a friend or something you read in a magazine or newspaper. It may come as a memory. It could come in nearly any way, but you will know when it comes only if you are open to receiving the answer in the format it comes in. It may require that you set aside everything you have been taught about God. It may require that you release all the restrictions you have heard or been taught by your religion or religious leaders. It may mean that you must set aside all the prohibitions and restrictions it took you a lifetime to learn about how God Must act and in what manner He Will act. It does mean that you must be bold enough to face God one on one with no religion, ritual, doctrine or dogma standing between you and Him and allow Him to become your friend. God does not want to be in a religion with you. God wants to be in a relationship with you. Oh, there is one thing that God needs. God needs you. Copyright 2008 by Perry Jones |
