Introduction

We are honored to present you the guidebook for the 3rd International Olympiad that is organized by Amersfoort in 1999. After a long period of preparations and with a lot off effort and help by all our volunteers we succeeded in organizing the 3rd Olympiad.

At lot off thanks go out to our sponsors whom collectively made it possible that this project can also be a financial success. A special thanks to the city off Amersfoort whom at many levels provided us with the moral and financial support. Also very we where very pleased with the help of the NV. SRO and the CIOS from Arnhem who provided us with help in organizing the game and sports day.

From all the members of the organizing committee I wish you and especially all the children from Europe a fine and pleasant Olympiad in Amersfoort.

May these festivities contribute towards a "shrinking" Europe.

Brief history

Two years ago mister Gritsch from the Volksschulle at Silz in Austria got the idea to organize an Olympiad for children the age of 10 years old. A great day with lots off game and sports activity’s was organized. This Olympiad was also visited by the children from Pulnoy France.

In 1998 Emilie Humbert from L’Ecole Primaire La Moissonnerie toke over this torch. In Pulnoy the second Olympiad was organized. This one lasted for 3 whole days and there where children from 4 different European countries, including the primary schools Caecillia and the TafelRonde from Amersfoort.

This Olympiad was a great happening, the children returned with colorful stories to tell. Other represented European countries where Great Britain, Germany and Austria.

During this Olympiad in France it was agreed upon that Amersfoort would host the 1999 Olympiad. Again children from all over Europe will have the opportunity to meet. Trough this opportunity we hope to create a better understanding and tolerance for each other with this generation.

The preparations for these Olympiads have taken over 8 months. After describing the outlines, primary schools in Amersfoort where approached to participate in this project. Quickly 10 schools agreed to participate and they decided to split the activities. Nine subcommittee’s where defined with each sub-committee having two to four members. The assignments for each committee are different. Some off them where assigned a limited task, others a larger task. Without short handing the other committee, the sub-committee’s that organized the sports activities and the finance committee are such large task.

The chairmen off all the committees met each other at the beginning off the month. Since the start off April 1999 they met once every two weeks. Up until now we are still on schedule. And are confident that the Olympiad will enjoy a great success. As chairman off the organizing committee I wish to thank all the contributors for their efforts and dedication. And it brings me great pleasure to see so many people from different schools and backgrounds to cooperate in such an outstanding way.

Tuesday 25 may 1999.

This day all children and their escorts will arrive in Amersfoort. The children are expected to arrive between 16:00 and 18:00. The guests will go directly to the school that is their assigned host. All guests will receive a road map off Amersfoort. On this roadmap it is clearly indicated where the assigned school is located. All the other locations, where activities are planned, are indicated on this roadmap.

After arriving at the schools all children and their escorts will be assigned to there respected host-families. The children will be given a meal and can then explore there surrounding environments.

The escorts are expected around 19:00 in the Armando museum where the organizing committee and the city off Amersfoort will welcome the guest officially. After this welcome our guest are invited for a diner. After the escorts are brought back to there host-families. We have chosen to house the escorts at host-family’s and/or with colleague teachers that live in the vicinity off the school. This way the escorts are housed near to children and can be quickly with a child in case of a problem.

Wednesday 26 may 1999

Breakfast will be served by the host-family where the children and escorts are staying. After breakfast they will go to the assigned school. The children can walk with the host-children to school. All schools start at 8:30. This morning the hosting schools have each prepared their own individual program. It will be an exciting morning in a Dutch school. Lunch will be served at school. The lunch will be a typical Dutch serving. The guests and the Dutch children off group 6 are leaving to the Zoo off Amersfoort; departure time will be 13:00. In the Zoo the children will be asked to participate in an activity program. Around 16:30 the children will be bused back to the schools. Then the children will bring all our guests back to their host-family. Diner will be served at the host-family. There is no Wednesday evening program.

Thursday 27 may 1999.

Breakfast will be served by the host-family where the children and escorts are staying. After breakfast they will go to the assigned school. The children can walk with the host-children to school. The children are expected at school at 8:30. From there everybody will be transported by bus to park Birkhoven.

The Olympiad will start at 9:45. The Olympiad will start with a parade. All children (Dutch and Foreign) will enter the grounds and the Olympic Flame will be ignited. Then the games can begin.

The day is filled with a variety off games, hopefully the children will enjoy these a lot. I can not tell to much; the program is a secret.

The lunch will be served at during the break off the Olympiad on park Birkhoven. The day will end at 15:30. The children will return to their school by busses, after which the children will join their host-families for diner.

The escorts are expected to be at De Drieslag around 19:00 for the closing barbecue. Their collegea of the host school will bring them there and they will bring our guests back to their host-families afterwards.

Friday 28 may 1999

Breakfast will be served by the host-family where the children and escorts are staying. After breakfast they are expected at their the assigned schools at 08:00 with their luggage. From there our foreign guest will be transported to theater ‘de Flint’ in the center of Amersfoort. For those guests who will return by bus to their respected homes, the luggage can stay on the bus. Those guests that return home by train or plane, can store their luggage in a secure and guarded storage area.

Then our guest will be taken on a guided tour trough the center of Amersfoort. The details are again a secret. A little surprise.

At 10:30 everybody is expected back at ‘de Flint’. The Dutch children will join our guest at ‘de Flint’. From this time forward everybody is presented with the closing program. Performances by a folk dance group and acrobats. Around 12:00 the official good-bye speech will be given by the mayor or a member of the city council off Amersfoort. Then our guest will be waved good-bye and those traveling by train will be brought to the train station.
