Biopower is an attribute of the society of control.SOC in turn … Disciplinary society inefficiently uses institutions to regulate society (see in modern industrial society which contains a wealth of institutions (unlike in the past) eg- hospitals, prisons, factories, etc) Society of control (current development) in which process of control is internalized within the subjects. Society infuses subjects with its own being. Unifies them and internalizes them within its own being. Person and society is no longer I and thou. It is we. Society becomes almost like a sentient being. It alienates people from true life (nature) and self and instead it itself becomes the source of life and being. People’s lives become less organic and more virtual and they draw their sense of being and purpose from the society of control. Soon, their very lives depend on this society for it replaces nature and it provides for all their needs. This life giving trait that the SOC has is its source of material power. Without it, life will fail. We are currently in a transition between disciplinary society and the society of control. In the disciplinary society the above is only partial and fraught with resistance. It is weak. It is static, for it can invade only up to a point and must then stop because it lacks resources to be all pervading. SOC, on the other hand is dynamic and alive and constantly infusing subjects with its own essence. Capitalism is one attribute of SOC that helps create this immanent, all pervading force. It absorbs labor power (there are no particulars). It controls all avenues of profit. IT compromises creativity. Absorbs the independent villages and rural communities into it’s urban mecca of financial profit, and it molds specialized collectives of workers out of the masses of independent merchants. All is absorbed into the state. Free will and individuality is compromised as the state becomes a Hobsean leviathan that controls and regulates all of life and existence. Human independence is compromisedas everything is identified and labeledas modes of society (SS#, DL, etc. The fed eral authority and state authority….? State or global?) though this is simply at a DC level. Eventually the SOC takes on a global identity whichallows for greater absorption of individuals (whether they be person, community or state) (eg- the juridical power of the UN) until all is subsumed into the essnce of global empire (eg- the UN’s increasing control over world order). It is a causal chain that flows from the individual to the state (modern) and finally into global order (post-modern). A sort of corpus mundi develops in which the individual identity is compromised as the self is subsumed by the global state. But doing so is akin to infecting a central database with a virus. Resistance (terrorists, activists, etc) who were once marginalized are now integrated within the body of the SOC as well and now are able to replicate their dissent (like a virus) into the very essence of the SOC. Once these groups (who were previously marginalized and contained within the outskirts of society) are incorporated, they can threaten a SOC by internal diffusion of ideas and behavior that is detrimental to the order and stability of a SOC. They can then create cultural and social changes from within the system that are injurious to the body of the SOC. Since a Soc is based on stability, order, equilibrium and harmony (as all organic bodies are) such a disruption can lead to a crisis in which the very juridical positivism of SOC is challenged and alternate forms of law and order are considered. In such a case, only an act of rehabilitation or societal protection will be able to isolate and neutralize the internalized threat. But doing so can disrupt the unity and oneness of a SOC. By compartmentalizing internal threats, the universal is reduced to particulars and can be detrimental to a social system (?) that derives its power from its unified, consolidated nature. It creates a paradox in which the multiplicity of activism and resistance threatens the order of a singularized global state. Therefore it is the necessity of the SOC to continually suppress internal conflict and change (eg- class conflict, inequality) and it does so by being as inclusive as possible of its global citizenry to the point that citizen and government are coexistent within the same substance of being and indistinguishable. (explain what you mean by globalized-growing sphere, now includes Japan and parts of asia, next Iraq?). It must prevent social movements that encourage change by championing order and peace and preventing deprivation amongst its subjects. It does so by fostering life, peace and order (at the price of its subjects’ loss of the right to free will and dissent) The biopower of the SOC can very well leadto its downfall or harm. In such an instance the Soc is no longer a pure singularity of life giving order, but a single host now filled with a multiplicity of dissent. When the SOC reaches the state of perfect control (like Plato’s Perfect Intelligence), this leads to an understanding and susceptibility to all particulars (both helpful and harmful to the state). Thus the SOC and its perfect authority must deal with the new internalized threats and they do so via the police and military and law. They do this not via totalitarianism and dictatorship, but via… The Soc is not totalitarian and directly oppressive. Such a system would not work of the SOC bases its juridical authority on the contingent of justice, without which its right of authority would be defaulted. It in truth fosters all of the characteristics of modernity: social diversity, increased personal choice, individuality, yet all of these attributes are simple modes of its own essence and if placed outside of the context of the SOC, they will no longer be viable. Modernity and its benefits become a gilded cage in which the average citizenry do not realize their own imprisonment. Life and existence itself are monopolized by the SOC and the citizenry are in truth utterly dependent on this institution. Modernity leads to a loss of Gemeinschaft and a rise in Gesellschaft (use just one word). The Soc capitalizes on this. The SOC becomes the sole source by which the individual canfind their purpose of being and satisfy their self-interest. In this manner the SOC consolidates the appetites and desires of modern citizenry by being the source of all fulfillment. In this way, the particulars of desire are unified into a single source of appeasement. The SOC once again becomes a universal source and all effects of modernity (eg- personal choice) and modernity is therefore not liberating but in fact facilitates the consolidation of SOC power. The potentiality of a future SOC is facilitated by the ever-expanding state and the growing consolidation of world beaurocracies. Governments are becoming increasingly unified. It is a causal (?) chain: the Peace of Westphalia, the Holy Alliance, the League of Nations, and currently the UN. It began with international order and has now lead to global order. Each incarnation is more efficient, unified and capable than its predecessor. There is a strong possibility that it will be only a matter of time before the world is ruled by a single supranational order that is absolute in its power and control over the human soul. 1
