Dec. 6 Pearl Harbor is attacked. Biggest US naval fleet, Most equipment was moved before attack

Some think FDR let it happened to rally the people to support the war. The Phillipines wern’t attacked.

Japan overan the Pacific took Hong Kong from Britain, lost few men etc.

Two important battles, Battle of Coral Sea, and Battle of Midway.

Polish Corridor- A piece of land that had been cut from Germany after WW1 to give Poland access to the sea. Hitler demanded it back for Germany. These demands convinced Britain and France that appeasement was no longer possible. They pledged to attack Hitler if he provoked Poland.

Luftwaffe- The German airforce. The main force that the Axis used to take Scandanavia and Norway. Their major sea ports and the capital, Oslo, fell in two days.

Churchill- The new leader of the British parliament. Winston Churchill had made a stand against Hitler. He said that there was no quick road to victory.

Maginot Line- The elaborate set of fortifications along the German border. They expected a defensive war like WWI. They were prepared for a trench war but not the Blitzkrieg. The German tore through the 2 million soldiers and took Belgium.

Dunkirk- A port along the English channel where the French were pushed along. Germans closed in for the kill. Luckily the British came to help them, after 8 days of fighting however few remained left to be saved.

Vichy Regime- Vichy was aa city in Southern France. When Marshall Petain gov’t came here they were called the Vichy Regime. Most saw him as a traitor to France. They eventuall became good partners with the Nazis.

Free French- The underground, a secret resistence movement known as the Free French. Led by General Charles de Gaulle. Though being caught meant death, they continued to Sabotage the Nazi’s.

De Gaulle- The leader of the Underground. He kept the secret society going.

RAF-The Royal Air Force. They were small and had few numbers. They had two secret weapons though. One was radar, an electronic tracking system. They also had Ultra, a code cracking machine, which enabled the British to decipher German codes..

Roosevelt- The president during the war. He wanted to send help but not people to the Allies. He also passed the Land-Lease Act.

Lend-Lease Act- The act passed in the US. Americas mighty industries roared to life. They produced weapons for the Allies.

Dec 7, 1941- The Battle of Pearl Harbor. This was a decisive battle that led to the US joining the Allies. They took out the biggest naval base we had. Fortunatley they had moved most of the ships.

Battle of Midway- The largest battle to take place in the Pacific. The US began island hopping, winning back territories from Japan.

Holocaust- The name of the WW2. This was the total wipe out and annihilation of the Jews in Europe. Millions died in the horrible execution run by the Nazi’s.

Rommel- A general for the German army. A tank warfare expert, he was the Desert Fox. He had pushed Britains forces in Africa to Germany and had them on a tight thread.

Montgomery- A British general who arrived in North Africa to help. He planned to attack, spending 2 months massing artillery and tanks. They struck in October. So quick was it that Rommel lost his 60,000 men, 500 tanks and 400 large artillery pieces in less than a week.

Eisenhower-

Truman- The president when Germany collapsed. On May 7, 1945 he had the German Navy and Army sign a n unconditional surrender. 1
