Europe Goes to War

-Nationalism, Imperialism, rival alliances, bring europe to War, arms race

-spark that sets off war is assasination of Frans Ferdinand

-Austria and Germany teach Serbia a lesson

-July 28, 1914 aystria-hungary declare war on Serbia, Support of Germany

-Serbia had Russia back them up

-Russia

had two things going for them

-Mobilization problem

-Britain gets involved when Belgiums neutrality is violated

-Austria-Hungary, Germany-Central Powers

-Serbia, France, Russia, G. Britain- allies

-Later turkey, Bulgaria join central powers/ France joins allies soon U.S.

-Germany invaded France

-Spirit-Elan

China Becomes Communist

Mao Tsetung/Communists- Mostly controlled China by 1945. He will recruit peasants, teach them to read and help them with agricultural production

Chiang Kaij-shek/Nationalists- control southern China, U.S. supports Nationalists. We give Billions in aide. They were corrupt however that they ignored the peasants

Chins and Civil war- 1946-1949, famine was rampant, economy on brink of collapse. They were stealing and looting people.

Communists Victorious- Communists win in 1949. The Peoples Republic of China, new gov’t under Mao. No vote or freedom

US refuses to recognize Com China- He totally ignored them. Chaing fled to Taiwan. US deals with Taiwan. Russia gave aid to China.

N. and S. Korean War- 1942 Japan left, Soviets hold n. U.S. s. Russians believe that US doesn’t want Korea so they try to take it.

Truman/UN sends troops to Korea- Orderd for troops to be sent back 16 nations sent to Korea. Backed them with major military backing. Leader for south was Douglas MacAurthr.

End of War- draw a line to divide Korea

38th Parallel- the dividing line between north and south.

1952 UN troops recapture Seoul- home of olympics in 88’. 5 million died in the war
