This was my very first romance novel. The story was set in England where Elizabeth met Ian at a ball. She was only seventeen then. She fell in love with him, but her reputation was ruined when she was caught alone with him in the greenhouse.
When she returned to Havenhurst alone, she had to sell almost everything to keep the place. When she met Ian again, she was about to enter a marriage without love. They still had feelings for each other, and Ian knew that Elizabeth was not a mercenary woman. He had to go to his grandfather to claim his title as the Marquess of Kensington, so that the lady's uncle would allow him to marry her.
However, after the marriage, Elizabeth's brother returned, telling her of Ian's deeds. She left with him, leaving Ian to wonder if she had really committed adultery. When Elizabeth knew of the trial that Ian was going through, she went to the House of Lords, to defend the man she loves.
