What about the hopelessly/criminally insane?

The Hopelessly/Criminally Insane

Warehouse them? or KILL them?

OK, how about "terminate"? Or better yet, "euthanize"?

Why shouldn't reason prevail over emotion?

Warehousing people, for whatever reason, makes no sense. Why should we keep someone around to be taken care of, fed, clothed, bathed, etc. at taxpayers' expense? Why is it even wrong to raise the question?

Why shouldn't those humans who have to be institutionalized at taxpayers' expense instead be terminated, killed, whatever you want to call it? What is the point of keeping them alive? If there is nothing "wrong" with them, then just let them go free. But if they are dangerous or a threat to society, why not eliminate them, rather than spending valuable resources on them? What is gained by wasting these resources?

If private charities can handle some of them, and can guarantee there is no threat to society, then let them take on the job. They could keep a few of them alive, if they think living human flesh must be taken care of, no matter how useless it is. It's a free country.

But why should anyone be forced to subsidize the care of anyone else? Especially when that care costs $50,000 per year, or more?

If you some day become a raving maniac who has to be locked up, should society (the taxpayers) be forced to take care of you? Why? When your brain is gone, what is left to take care of? 200 pounds of flesh which has to be kept warm? For what?

Why do we fall over ourselves protecting the "rights" of mentally retarded convicted criminals, insisting that because they are retarded, they cannot be executed? Why should mental retardation be a reason to keep them alive? If it's OK to execute them if they are "normal," why not if they are "abnormal"? What is the difference?

The point of executing criminals should be to protect society against their aggressive behavior, not pure revenge for the sake of revenge.

Why is it that no one will speak honestly on this subject? Why is there a taboo on raising these questions? Is this one of those subjects we're not supposed to talk about? Is it politically incorrect to raise rational questions like these?

Embedded in our ideas about keeping these humans alive are some deep-rooted philosophical and metaphysical belief systems. Even these deep-rooted beliefs must be some kind of embarrassment to us, because no one wants to talk about them and bring them under the light of day. This whole subject is summarily dismissed with a few rhetorical phrases about "human dignity" and some quotes from the Bible or from some papal bull. Nothing that really makes any sense.

Aren't we grown-up enough to get honest about this, finally? How much longer must we wait?
