The table below summarizes Table 3. It shows clearly that those countries with lower average tariff rates generally tend to have a higher GDP per capita and a higher quality of life. As you go down the list of categories, the GDP per capita decreases and the Quality of Life Index deteriorates (higher index denotes lower quality of life.)

This table breaks down the total list of countries into 13 categories, ranked according to the "Weighted Average Tariff" from column 6. The breaking points are partly arbitrary, out of necessity, but each category contains at least 7 countries and no more than 14, and as much as possible the breaking points are set where there is a break in the "Weighted Average Tariff". This table indicates the average GDP and quality-of-life index for each of the 13 categories of countries and shows the general pattern more clearly, which is that higher tariffs are generally correlated to a lower GDP per capita and lower quality of life.

*The Quality of Life listing does not give Q of L indexes for every country. So in column 4 the number in parenthesis indicates the number of countries in that category for which a Quality of Life index is given, and these indexes are the ones used to compute the Q of L average for that group of countries. Obviously if the sample number is only 2, the average ranking for that group is less representative than for a sampling of 11 or 12.
