X Windows
The software system written for managing windows under Unix. A graphics architecture, application programming interface and prototype implementation developed by the Massachussetts Institute of Technology. X Windows defines a client/server relation between the applications program and the workstation. It is not, however, a complete graphical user interface, but rather the basis upon which one can be built.

X.25
An International Telecommunications Union Telecommunications Standards Sector interface standard for connection of data terminal equipment to a public packet-switching network. X.25 defines the services that the user can expect from a public packet-switching network, including the establishment of virtual circuits through the network to exchange packets with other users.

X.25 WAN
Support of the X.25 wide-area network protocol for system and network interconnection.

X.400
The International Telecommunications Union Telecommunications Standards Sector guidelines that defines the basis for providing message handling services, such as store-and-forward electronic mail.

X.500
The International Telecommunications Union Telecommunications Standards Sector standard for directory services.

X/Open
An international consortium of computer vendors that aims to create and promote a vendor-independent interface standard called the Common Applications Environment (CAE). CAE addresses the operating system interface, data management and languages, and includes networking and a graphical user interfaces. X/Open was founded in Europe by European vendors, but has expanded to include a number of U.S. companies (AT&T, Digital Equipment Corp., Hewlett-Packard, NCR, Unisys and Sun Microsystems) and an office in the United States.

X/Open Branding
Verified midrange system software compliance, in accordance with the X/Open branding program, with the X/Open consortium’s Common Applications Environment XPG3 base profile.

X/Open Distributed Transaction Processing
An on-line transaction processing monitor compliant with the X/Open "XA" distributed transaction processing advance specification.

X/Open ISAM
Support, compliant with X/Open XPG volume 5, for indexed sequential access method files.

X/Open NLS
National Language Support compliant with the X/Open XPG3 volume 3 National Language Support specification.

XA (Extended Architecture)
System/370 XA is the second major extension of IBM’s System/360 architecture. It was delivered in 1983 on the 308X processors, and is now available on the 3090 and 4381. The major new features in XA were 31-bit addressing and a more sophisticated input/output subsystem. It is supported by the MVS/XA and VM/XA operating systems.

XIE (X-Windows Image Extensions)
Extensions that support client compression/decompression.

XRF (Extended Recovery Facility)
A reliability enhancement for an IMS/VS database/data communications environment. It provides the capability of creating a "mirror" IMS system and synchronizing it to the primary subsystem. The mirror IMS/VS system takes over the workload from the primary subsystem in the case of some, but not all, disruptive events, thereby improving availability. XRF will also facilitate testing and installation of new software releases. It has also been extended to CICS.

XTI Transport Interface
Support provided for applications that use the X/Open XTI programming interface for peer-to-peer communications.
