The truth shows the conformity of the idea
with the object, the thought with the expression, the fact told with its
reality. It's the quality through which things appear as they are.
The use of truth allows a human being to go
along with the natural laws, aligning himself as a realistic font of the
Universal Intelligence.
In this sense, it seems important to cultivate
the habit of telling the truth from the cradle, offering parents and children
sound examples of truthfulness, in both small daily things and in more
complex situations, like sex and taking responsibility for one's mistakes,
defining them as such.
Lying is hiding the truth, and this includes
not only stating the false as if it were the true, but also omitting reality
on purpose.
Even in difficult situations such as malignant
diseases, it seems advantageous to tell the absolute truth. Or even better,
the available truth, which allows Man to become aware of his condition.
Only if he is conscious can he meditate upon the causes of his illness
and, with proper psychological and physiological support, develop the appropriate
response. Nowadays, we have several examples of difficult clinical situations
that have been solved with a positive response from the patient, who removed
the causes of the illness, leading a healthier life and facing the future
with optimism.
As for Absolute Truth, it cannot yet be available
to Man, the tiny inhabitant of such a small planet when compared to the
immense universe.
So, he seems to be gaining access to the truth
he is entitled to because of his honest effort of investigation, his search
for clarification and a greater control of universal knowledge.
Man is following his evolving path, in which
he overcomes lie, destroying dogmas, clarifying mysteries, weakening fanaticisms
and putting an end to exploitation and businesses built on falsehood.
The truth is simple. Socrates said: "I know
only one thing which is: I know nothing".
The truth is courageous and persistent. Gallileo,
in spite of being condemned by the "Holy Church", kept his theory about
the Earth moving around the Sun: "eppur si muove" (and yet it moves).
The truth is calm and tolerant. Jesus, unjustly
condemned and crucified for trying to enlighten humanity, said: "Father,
forgive them, because they don't understand what they are doing".
The true cultivators of truth have no self-interest:
they ask for nothing, they accept nothing; they give themselves.
