What is the essence, what really makes a thing
be what it is. The main idea, the necessary, the most important, the indispensable.
How often man, in his daily life, loses sight
of what is essential, distracting himself with the accessory or secondary.
Today’s common man, as well as many historical personalities from the past.
Sometimes we find it difficult to choose what
is truly essential. Some other times, we know what really matters, but
we don’t give it the right priority. Because it is apparently easier to
dedicate ourselves to secondary things, because we let other people’s actions
distract us, because we allow our own limitations, such as selfishness,
cowardliness, vanity or exaggerated ambition, upset us.
Therefore, we lose so much energy ingloriously;
we waste so much time uselessly; so many resources are thrown away, and
many beautiful projects are postponed.
However, as time goes by, it seems that Man
worries more and more about his prior dedication to what is essential.
Thinking through things, trying to concentrate
his thought in the search for more appropriate solutions to his problems,
Man at the close of the 20th century will strengthen his personality, in
order to be able to draw his own way, according to his highest interests.
Today, the management of time and resources
is valued a lot, not only in modern business management, but also in the
management of public affairs and, more and more, in the management of one’s
private life.
Permanent attention, defined by some current
oriental philosophies, is understood as indispensable for Man to be engaged
in the fulfilment of his highest aims. Understood, accepted and adopted,
in an exercise of growing self-improvement.
The control of his actions, deviations and
fulfilment of his aims is going to be used by many different collective
organizations, including the family and the individual himself. In the
last case, it is similar to an exam of conscience, which has been divulged
by many western doctrines for a long time.
More and more and better and better, Man seems
to be able to distinguish the essential from the accessory, concentrating
his attention and driving his energy towards what is most important. This
way, his capacity for fulfilment grows, his sense of usefulness changes
and he sees that happiness exists.
