St. Peter's Basilica viewed from the Piazza

St. Peter's Basilica is the tallest building in Rome. Visitors can climb to the top of the high dome and look out over the city. This difficult climb up countless steps is well worth the effort. At one point in the ascent, those going to the top use a rope suspended down the center of a spiral staircase! On a clear day from the top of the dome, you can see even the snow on top of distant mountains.

Rome does not have any skyscapers to speak of, and there are strict government regulations on the color and construction of new buildings. Because of the city's ancient past, there is only a limited subway system of two lines. When they dug to expand the subway system, they uncovered more ruins of the ancient city, and, not having the funds to conduct a proper archeological excavation, they simply covered up the holes and left the excavating for another time.
