The Roman God Neptune

Neptune is the Roman god identified with the Greek deity Poseidon, god of the sea. Neptune's festival is listed in the oldest calendars and took place in the heat of summer (July 23) when water was most wanting. It may be conjectured that its purpose was the propitiation of the water deity. Little is known about the celebration of the festival.

In art, Neptune appears as the Greek god Poseidon, whose attributes are sea horses, dolphins, and the trident.
