Thus deciding his course, Eurylochus with his allies proceeded into the interior part of the island. Still so great was the fear that seized the spirits of the men that they might believe themselves to be approaching to death. They, who had been left behind in the ship, themselves were believing the comrades would never be seen afterwards. They however after a short time journeying through a field came to a small house.
When they visited at the entrance, they heard the voice of a female singer. After they knocked at the door twice, a beautiful woman, whose name was Circe, (answered?) and greeted and received them with the greatest kindness. Eurylochus did not enter with the rest fearing an ambush but he was settled nearly at the door. There he waited to sundown for his uneasy friends; thereafter he hurried to the ship at sunrise.
Eurylochus might have one with them, he was so frightened with fear that he might have seen with difficulty him being able to tell the story. Meanwhile they who had entered into the house found a prepared feast. Yet Circe, who had a great magical skill, gave them wine in which she put a certain drug. After the Greeks drank the wine, Circe covered the head of her magic wand. After his deed, all were transformed into pigs.
Ulysses, when he knew his friends were in great danger, he took a sword and proceeded into the island. Immediately he had gone to the house of Circe. Suddenly the god Mercury took the band that had entered at this house. "Who," he asked, "struggles? No one knew this might be Circe's house? They are your friends even though they have been changed out of humans into pigs. Do you yourself wish to come to the same calamity." From this word, he gave this god gave him a certain herb, which was very powerful against magic. After a short distance, Ulysses beat the door and Circe kindly accepted him by this.
All merely made and formerly of them. Although Circe attempted to change Ulysses himself into a pig through magic, she was not able to accomplish this on account of the herb. Thereafter Ulysses was going to kill her by means of the sword. Circe, terrified, begged pardon and the pigs that were humans immediately were changed into human form.
Although Ulysses had to depart quickly out from this island which was in spirit, Circe however wished greatly for him to remain with her for a few days. Changed out from hatred to love, she gave great kindness to Ulysses and his friends. And thus he was delayed for the entire year with Circe.
