After the Greeks had progressed a few miles passes from the shore of Troy, such a storm had risen suddenly so that no ship was able to hold course, but they were scattered in part elsewhere. The ship of Ulysses had been brought by the storm to the land of Africa. Ulysses decided to set forth into the land a little from his comrads, who explained the region and brought back water to the ship, and might be what nature recognized his place.

He prepared to make the order to disembark out from the ship. Yet while they sought water, they discovered hereafter from the island and were received kindly by him. The food consisted of a wonderful fruit from which almost all of the men had, that were called lotus. The Greeks, as soon as they tasted this food, they put aside the memory of their homeland and country. With great shouts, they strengthened themselves always to be in this land so that they devoured this food forever. " Let us remain in this marvolous land! May those go back home who wish to return!"

Finally was sent by many of the sailors in this region, who knew what the cause he let be the delay. And thus he explained this to the village in the land who did not by far depart. Sonn they discovered their comrades greedily devouring the lotus, but they did not immediately remember their homeland, nor their house, nor their friends. Especially they did not desidre past the lots. They yelled strongly to them that did not wish to leave from this place.

Learning of this situation, Ulysses with the remaining men who had been left behind in the ship came to this place. He ordered his comrades in vain to return on their own will. " Would that you not leave the ship!" said Ulysses. " May your spirits be overcome and let us drag the unwilling comrades to the ship!" They placed all the unwilling and overcome comrade on the ship and after swiftly set sail from the port.
