The Fatal Wine

Hercules, while venturing in Arcadia, came to this place where the Centaurs lived. The Centaur was a horse but had a man's body. Soon, because the night now was approaching, he hastened to the cave, in which a certain Centaur, with the name Pholus, lived. He courteously accepted Hercules and prepared food. " Good is your food, friend; I am very much thirsty. Give me wine also!"" He was in the huge cave by the great wine jar which the Centaurs laid aside there. Pholus was unwilling to drink this wine because he feared the remaining Centaurs. " This wine', he said, "has been entrusted to me. If I give it to you, the Centaurs will kill me." Hercules then laughed at him himself and drew a cup of wine from the jar. At once they had opened the jar, and a wave of the most pleasant odor poured out. The Centaurs felt the known odor, and everyone immediately assembled to the place. " What is that? Who is this man drinking the wine," and they wished to kill Pholus. Hercules defended his friend Pholus and restrained the strongest attack of them. He wounded many by means of his arrows. These were the same arrows which formerly had been saturated in the blood of the Hydra. All those that had been wounded by the arrows were consumed. This force, the remaining begged flee(?) to safety.
