Training

Pat received her training in Alphabetic Phonics (AP) through the Neuhaus Education Center and became a Certified AP Therapist in 1988.  Since then she has completed certification requirements as a Master Instructor of AP through Neuhaus Education Center as well as becoming a Certified Academic Language Therapist and a Certified Academic Language Instructor through the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).

Introductory Course: Basic Language Skills

  1. Explore alternative sequential, systematic, multisensory, reading, spelling, and handwriting methodology for students who have been unsuccessful with regular classroom curriculum;
  2. Apply Orton-Gillingham principles to teaching students who need an alternate reading, spelling, and handwriting program.
Advanced Course: Basic Language Skills

  1. Refine skills and techniques introduced in the Introductory Course of Basic Language Skills.
Dyslexia: It's Not Reversals Anymore
3.5 hrs
  1. Identify characteristics of dyslexia and its related Disorders;
  2. Increase understanding and facilitate techniques to more effectively work with individuals identified with dyslexia; 
  3. Increase awareness of the typical difficulties and frustrations dyslexics encounter daily;
  4. Participate in six activities that simulate dyslexia.
'504' Ways to Accommodate
3.5 hrs
  1. Determine appropriate accomodation/modifications for students identified as learning different in the regular classroom;
  2. Explore differences between Section 504/IDEA/Texas dyslexia legislation.
Dysgraphia: Is the Writing on the Wall?

  1. Identify characteristics of dysgraphia (a related disorder to dyslexia);
  2. Explore the difference between "sloppy" and dysgraphic handwriting;
  3. Become familiar with classroom accommodations that will increase student's productivity with written assignments.
Reading Readiness
6 hrs
  1. Explore multisensory techniques for presenting phonemic awareness, alphabet recognition, verbal expression ideas, and letter/sound introductions for prevention, intervention, and/or remediation.
Scientific Spelling
6 hrs
  1. Explore the reliable spelling patterns and rules of the English language;
  2. Identify irregular words for spelling;
  3. Implement techniques for instructing students in identifying the difference between the two types of spelling words.
How to Spell Scientifically
3 hrs
  1. Investigate research on how spelling develops and what teaachers should know to help students become better spellers;
  2. Explore Scientific Spelling principles [see Scientific Spelling] for general and special classroom implementation.
ABCs of Dyslexia Evaluations
6 hrs
  1. Identify critical tests necessary for dyslexia testing;
  2. Map dyslexia profiles on "stair step" profile.
