What's an Esbat?

This is one of the things that confuse most people actually. An esbat is a celebration that is held during the full moon, but only during a month that does not have a Sabbat in it. That's actually the common error we come across. Many wish to know after Midsummer if we are going to be holding an esbat as well. Midsummer is not celebrated on the night of the full moon so thus the confusion. Actually there are only four Sabbats each year that aren't, they are known as the lessor Sabbats. They are: Mabon , Yule, Ostara, and Midsummer marking the autumn equinox, the winter solstice, spring equinox, and the summer solstice.

Oh and about that other misconception let's get rid of that here. There truly is no "floating" esbat that shows up every two and a half years! That's going by a solar calendar. A lunar calendar has thirteen months, every year it doesn't change. It is a little difficult to calculate though it's really something to see.

Esbats can be used for just about anything when preparing a circle. Group mediations, healing ceremonies, handfastings and pagannings, and most of all celebrating. A group can use this time just to gather and have some fun. After all is said and done a party is a great way to raise energy.

The full moon is the representation of the Goddess in her mother aspect. She is full of love and compassion and energy. Giving honor to her on these nights is very acceptable and is quite a bit less ceremonial.

No matter what the reason we should never forget these few things.

The Deity you worship.

The earth about you.

Your family and friends.

Yourself.

That's right, you. You are one of the most important things and your magick should reflect the true you. Set up your esbats to be what you would like. Don't forget such great rites as "The Chocolate Ritual." "The Goddess Festivals". "A Visit with the Sea Queen." "Raising a Cone of Power." And dozens of others.

Have fun, enjoy, raise some energy, and relax-- no fanfare needed here, just pure delight and maybe some dancing under the moon!
