Undines are the elemental beings that compose water. They are able to control the course and function of the water element. Undines also work with the plants that grow underwater and with the motion of the water. Wherever there is a natural source of water they can be found. In fact they can be found in just about any source of water, including fountains. They have beautiful voices and can sometimes be heard singing over the sound of the water. Undines as all the other elementals are associated with the meanings of the elements. Water represents the feeling side of our natures as much as fire represents the physical side. It is in emotional balance we find love and learn compassion for others and ourselves. Water is the element of emotion and subconscious. It is psychic ability. It is a feminine and receptive element and governs spells involving mirrors. Water is essential to spells and rituals for friendship, marriage, happiness, fertility, healing, pleasure and psychic abilities. It is represented by the direction West, the place of the setting sun, Autumn, the time of the harvest, and by dusk or twilight. In tarot it is the cups and its magickal tool is the cup or chalice and the cauldron. Its astrological signs are Cancer, Scorpip and Pisces.

Water rules the emotional life of the witch, and it is generally located in the West. Ondines or Undines are the elementals. They are said to look like mermian (male and female 'mermaids'; according to a story related by Nancy Watson; this is the name they prefer.) I have also heard that they look rather like little jelly doughnuts (no holes in the middle) to some people. The tool that is used to represent water is always some form of the chalice or cauldron. (I guess this one seemed pretty obvious enough to leave no room for argument! ; )) Another common tool or vessel for magick that comes from this realm is blessed water or the use of oils.

The element of water is governed by the Western Quarter of the circle. The ruler of the element of water is Niksa, and she oversees the Undines, Nymphs, Mer-people, and the little ones of the springs, lakes, ponds, and rivers. Water is considered a female energy, its color is pure blue and it's cold and moist. The positive associations with water are: sunset, Fall, the chalice and cauldron, any form of helpful water, compassion, peacefulness, forgiveness, love and intuition. The negative association with water are: floods, rainstorms, whirlpools, any kind of harmful water, laziness, indifference, instability, lack of emotional control, and insecurity.
