By Denise Caraballo Seven Central music students had the distinct privilege of performing alongside the New England Jazz Ensemble in March at the Westport Arts Center. "It was one of the best experiences we all had. It was a very professional, energized, and well-received performance," said band director Gary Ruggiero. The students who participated in the performance were Jessica Alicea, Darnell Andrews, Vernit Hohbeb, Antonio Molina, David Quinones, Jason Williams, and Milton Young. Their three selections were "Satin Doll," "Big Band Blues," and "Tema: El Punto." "I think they realized what level of playing proficiency they need to strive for to be at a professional level. They developed a respect and lasting friendship with the professionals involved," said Ruggiero. The band's plans for the spring include performances at the spring concert in May, the Memorial Day Parades of Ansonia, Stratford, and Bridgeport, the Barnum Festival Parade on Sunday June 30, the Blackrock Day Parade on June 2, and the Graduation ceremony. The band will prepare for the next season of competition which begins in October by returning to school two weeks early for band camp. "Anyone who played an instrument in elementary school and wants to get back into playing can rejoin the band by signing up for a class at Central," invited Ruggiero. |
