By YoYo Taylor Led by Mike Garcia, Vivian Lau, Scott Taing, and Coach Jack Nilan the team earned $1,000 to support computer science activities at Central. Central edged out two prestigious prep schools, Greens Farms Academy and The Hotchkiss School, to win the G.E. competition, which included the top teams from public and private schools throughout the state. Junior Mike Garcia achieved the highest individual score and was awarded the Presidential Scholarship to Fairfield University, in addition to winning a $250 savings bond. "Mike was unbelievable. He had a great day," said Coach Nilan. The competition took the form of a one and one half hour test, prepared by Dr. George Lang and Dr. Edward J. O'Neill from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Fairfield University. The high schools from around the state included Bristol Central High School, Central High School, Danbury High School, Greens Farms Academy, Hamden Hall Country Day School, The Hotchkiss School, New Britain High School, Nonnewaug High School, Northwest Catholic High School, Notre Dame Catholic High School, Miss Porter's School, Rocky Hill High School, Mark T.
