The Jefferson High School Band has existed for more than 75 years in Daly City. In recent years, under the direction of William Burkhead, the band has been enjoying renewed growth and has been garnering rave reviews from those fortunate enough to hear then. Over the past year and a half the band has performed at various functions around Daly City, as well as returned to the tradition of marching.
"What we need now is a set of new uniforms to show off our 'new' band. We've been working very hard to change the image of our school and that of our Performing Arts Department," Burkhead said. "It's time to showcase our band to the community and let everyone know how awesome our kids are."
So far the band has raised nearly $8,000 toward new uniforms. An additional $4,000 is needed to make the dream a reality.
"The Jefferson Alumni Association and the History Guild of Daly City/Colma have been very generous with donations. I can't thank them enough for getting the word out and letting people know of our need," Burkhead said.
Each uniform costs approximately $200 and includes a jacket, pants, hat plume, shoes and accessories. The band has 40 members, but is planning for 60 students over the next few years.
Additional uniforms are being purchased now rather than later to accommodate this growth, and to ensure that all the uniforms match exactly.
People interested in making a contribution to the Jefferson High School Band Uniform Fund may call the band at (650)992-4050, Ext. 288, or may write to Jefferson High School, Attn. Mr. Wm. Burkhead, director of bands, 6996 Mission St., Daly City, 94014.     1
