Back to Jeff
By Vanessa Wong and Kelly Duong
Memories and The Way We Were. Nope, those weren't the Barbra Streisand songs that we karaoked to on November 2, those were the feelings we, encountered during our trip back to Jefferson High School for Jefferson's 75th anniversary celebration.
Often after high school graduation, grads feel no need to go back and survey the area where they spent 4 years vegitating. But, we felt a need to go see how our former teachers and former schoolmates were doing. We wanted to celebrate Jefferson Day, and bring people up to date on our lives. It didn't hurt that we had some bragging to do of our own. Not only were we not geeks anymore, but we are decently mature, smart, and cool.
So, the day began at 10a.m. when we stepped foot on Jefferson ground for the first time in 3 and 1/2 years. The look was the same, but the atmosphere was somehow different. We sensed the changes right away, since there was construction going on to the cafateria area. Dirt piles and tractors parked around the classrooms definitely reaffirmed the changes that have occured since 1994. However, everything else was pretty much the way we remembered it.
After looking at the subtle change to Jeff, we took a walk down to Jefferson field where the festivities were taking place. We saw various booths from the clubs and classes. On one side were games and other fun stuff and on the other were classic cars that were displayed from the auto class. After searching for familiar faces and enjoying the booths, we decided to take a tour of the campus and see what other changes have occured and who we can reminisce with.
We finally spotted our former teachers and a few
former classmates chowing down on a pancake breakfast in the cafateria. We were so envious of the food, that we decided to take a break and have some pancakes, sausage, and eggs. The food seemed greasy and yucky at first, but after our first bite, we both agreed that the pancakes were indeed delicious. After the breakfast, we were ecstatic to be able to find out what has been going on with other grads and teachers.
Since the day was coming to an end, we found our way
to the gym. It seemed like a scene out of a movie, but it was real life. We walked into the dark empty gym wondering what we would find in it. Instead of finding more booths, we found that old Jefferson Spirit. The cold, dark gym gave us goosebumps and we envisioned those loud spirited rallies that took place in there. It was a confort zone for us and we realized that it was an emotional moment thinking back to a time when everyone in the school and all their classmates got together to show off who the best class was. It was hard not to think about those memories and how times have changed and how friends have gone their own seperate ways. But we had the shared experience of those rallies and this special school.
