CONTEST

The IHSA State Organizational contest is coming up and the Band, Chorus, and Stage Band are busy preparing their repertoire of contest pieces. Director Keith Mitchell has chosen the following pieces for the contest on April 18th, 1998…

The pieces are: 

BAND - Sinfonians, Cajun Folk Songs, Chester

CHORUS - Sing a Tapestry, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, Morning by the Sea 

STAGE BAND - In the Mood, Fascinating Rhythm

SPRING CONCERT

On the day after Contest, the Band, along with the other two performing groups, will present the Spring Concert. Pieces for this performance are: Chester, Cajun Folk Songs, & Sea of Dreams (a new composition by student Jeff McCullough). This year's Combined Band (a culmination of area grade school band students with the High School Band) will perform an arrangement of the film score of the Oscar-winning film, "TITANIC." Mr. Mitchell shall honor the Seniors in between songs. Also, six band awards will be presented. First, the Arion Award shall be given to a Senior recipient voted upon by the students. Secondly, the director will bestow the John Phillip Sousa Award to an outstanding Senior member of the Band. Finally, Most-Improved Player Awards will be presented to one deserving member of each class.

As for the Chorus, they shall be performing four songs: Joy in the Morning, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, and This Good Earth. Two of them are Contest Pieces and the other two are pieces prepared in class. Between songs, Mr. Mitchell will honor the Senior members of the Chorus along with present the Arion Award to a Student voted upon by his or her peers.

The Stage Band will open the concert with such tunes as: Fascinating Rhythm, First Child, Norwegian Wood, and the classic Glenn Miller tune In the Mood.

The concert is free and open to the public. The location is as follows: MAIN GYM @ FREEBURG COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL; 401 S. Monroe; Freeburg, IL 62243. Enter the Main Gym from the East or West Entrance….

SOLO & ENSEMBLE CONCERT

Something new for the Music Department is the Solo and Ensemble Concert. Students who took a vocal/instrumental solo and or ensemble to contest back in March will have a chance to perform their pieces once again for fun and to entertain those in the community. The public is invited!

IHSA CONTEST RESULTS

All three performing groups went to Nashville High School for the IHSA contest today. In the early morning, Stage Band played for the jazz judges and received performance ratings of I, I, and II. This ultimately gave them a I ranking (Superior). Later on, Chorus will

SPRING CONCERT REPORT

Stage Band opened this concert to audience acclaim. They played a variety of rock, jazz and big band songs, one of which was In the Mood which got a good response from the crowd. Mr. Mitchell recognized the senior players and commented "We have some big shoes to fill."

Chorus came next. They sang four songs for the crowd, an inspirational song, a civil war hymn, another inspirational hymn and finally a religious ballad. Seniors were honored. Subsequently, Mr. Mitchell received a desk clock as a gift from Chorus Seniors. Also, Clarice Schaefer was given the Arion award for Chorus.

Concert Band closed the Concert with Chester, Cajun Folk Songs, and the world premiere of Sea of Dreams by Jeff McCullough. McCullough received a well-deserved standing ovation for his composition. Corey Wagner and Jon Lamborn then received awards. Corey got the Arion Award for Band and Jon Lamborn recieved the John Phillip Sousa Award. To read about the Most Improved players, follow this link

To top off this concert, a culmination of students from Freeburg, Smithton, and St. Libory Grade Schools joined the band to peform an arrangement of the Oscar-Wining Film Score of the "TITANIC."

LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

27 Students from the Music Department will be attending a Leadership Workshop at Chesterfield High School in Chesterfield, MO in May. The workshop will be led by world known speaker Tim Lautzenheiser. Mr. Mitchell hopes that this will be a positive experience for potential section leaders in years ahead.

CANADA TOUR COMING UP!

There was a Tour meeting on Tuesday April 28, 1998! We all look forward to it!

SOLO and ENSEMBLE CONCERT A SUCCESS!

Thursday, May 14th, was the Solo and Ensemble Concert. A wide variety of talent was exposed to the audience and a good time was had by all. Mr. Mitchell believes this can continue on as a tradition due to its great success. See you there next year…

ST. CLAIR COUNTY ARTS FESTIVAL CANCELLED

Due to inclement weather, the St. Clair County Regional Board of Schools cancelled the events for Tuesday, May 12th. Sadly, Freeburg High was scheduled for that day. Hopefully next year will be better with weather.

May 21

GRADUATION

On May 28th, 1998, Freeburg Community High School shall hold its commencement ceremonies for the Senior class. The Band and Chorus shall be there to perform. The Band shall play an arrangement of the Oscar-Winning Score of Titanic before welcoming in the graduating class with the traditional song Pomp and Circumstance. First Chair Ensemble will then perform their rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Halfway through the ceremony the Chorus will perform The Farewell Song to bid adieu to the Seniors. Once the ceremony is ended, the Band shall play an arrangement of Beauty and the Beast as the graduates file out of the Gymnasium.

EXCITEMENT A BREWIN' OVER TOUR

In just two weeks, the Band along with the Flags and Pom Pons shall be boarding their charter bus for a week of fun and concerts in our neighbor to the north, CANADA! Click here to read about it…

Graduation has commenced and finals are done. So, what next for the Music Department? Well, the Band is eagerly awaiting their Tour this week and Summer Band is only a month away… Expect pics from the trip once we get back!

Canada 1998 Tour is now over. All of the touring musicians got off the charter buses this morning full of great memories of tour. Expect to see pics and a page all about the tour coming soon…

NEW DRUM MAJOR ANNOUNCED

Mr. Mitchell has selected the new drum major to take the place of Corey Wagner, who graduated this spring. Garrett Mitchell shall lead the band in their marching events this year. The band wishes him the best.

FREEBURG HOMECOMING PARADE

On Saturday August 15, 1998, the town of Freeburg will have its Homecoming Parade. The FCHS Marching Band will march as an event in the parade, led by their Director Keith Mitchell and Drum Major Garrett Mitchell.

MARCHING BAND TO PERFORM AT HOME FB GAMES

September 4th marked the first home game for the Freeburg Football team as well as the first field performance of the Marching Midgets this year. Another performance took place on the 18th, and three more will be done at the October 1, 16, & 23 home games (not including possible playoff games).

CHORUS AND STAGE BAND APPEARANCE

At the upcoming meeting of several Southern Illinois School Boards, the Chorus as well as the Stage Band will perform ceratin numbers for the audience of school board members. This is to take place on Thursday October 1st.

BAND TO MARCH IN MARION

Band Council, under the leadership of President Perry Trolard, voted upon marching in the Marion Oktoberfest Parade on October 10th. NOTE: Due to the PSAT Testing on October 17th, the FCHS Marching Band will NOT be performing in the SIU-Carbondale Homecoming Parade this year. Also, there are plans in the works to take volunteers up to University of Illinois to spectate at the Marching Band Festival.

MARION PARADE THIS SATURDAY

This Saturday, October 10th, the Marching Midgets will march in the Marion Oktoberfest Parade.

IMEA AUDITIONS

District VI auditions for the Illinois Music Educators Association All-District Festival will be held on Tuesday, October 13th at Mount Vernon High School. Certain students from Band, Chorus, and Stage Band will audition for seats in the All-District Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Jazz Band. Those selected for their respective performing group will convene for the All-District Festival on November 14th at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

BAND PLACES IN MARION PARADE

The Marching Midgets under the direction of Keith Mitchell and Drum Major Garrett Mitchell performed in the Marion Oktoberfest Parade. At an awards ceremony afterwards, the band placed second among all other marching bands.

ALL-DISTRICT AUDITIONS

Fifteen music students from the music department will audition for seats in one of the All-District performing groups this Tuesday, October 13th. For more information on this audition, click here.

JAZZ FESTIVAL

On November 7th, Sean Easlick participated in the IMEA All-District Jazz Festival in one of the Jazz Bands on Alto Saxophone. Congrats to Sean and all others participating in the Band/Orchestra/Chorus Festival this coming Saturday, the 14th.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Freeburg High School Music Department would like to wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving...

MARCHING BAND TO APPEAR IN BELLEVILLE PARADE

On the day after Thanksgiving, the Marching Band, Poms, and Color Guard will represent the high school in the Belleville Optimists Santa Claus Parade. Hope to see you in the crowds.

IMEA ALL-DISTRICT FESTIVAL

On November 14th, Eight music students participated in the IMEA All-District Festival in all of the performing groups. Shortly after the festival, director Keith Mitchell attended the All-State Selection Meeting. We will have an update on the selections from our school to all-state.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

The Music Department will be putting on its annual Christmas Concert on Sunday December 13, 1998 @ 2:30 P.M. in the Main Gymnasium. Band, Chorus, and Stage Band under the direction of Keith Mitchell shall perform a wide variety of Christmas music for the enjoyment of all who attend the concert. SCIBDA FESTIVAL

One third of the Band's Enrollment shall be participating in the SCIBDA Band Festival on Monday, December 7th at Wesclin High School.
