Antietam National Battlefield The Battle of Antietam
(or Sharpsburg), fought on September 17, 1862 beside the Antietam Creek
on the farmlands of Sharpsburg, Maryland, was the bloodiest single-day
battle in American history. This engagement was considered to be a tactical
draw for both armies—the Confederate army under the command of General
Robert E. Lee, and the Union army under the command of Major General
George B. McClellan.
