Johan's Town Crier: Arts & Sciences Projects
Art/Sci projects I've managed to get done since I've moved to Ansteorra in June 1997:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Armouring: I had to completely re-strap my armour to get ready for the spring fighting season.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brewing: Here's what I've started so far:
Meads: 5-gal Traditional Mead using wildflower honey
5-gal Traditional Mead using wildflower honey

Melomels: 5-gal Peach Mead/Melomel

10-gal Mango Mead/Melomel
5-gal Pear Mead/Melomel
5-gal Apricot Mead/Melomel
5-gal Cherry Mead/Melomel
5-gal Blueberry Mead/Melomel
Metheglins: 5-gal Rosemary Mead/Metheglin
5-gal Spiced Yule Mead/Metheglin
Ales: 5-gal Nut Brown Ale
5-gal Pale Ale
5-gal Australian Bitter Ale
5-gal Weiss Bier
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Candlemaking: Made 70 2.5"x4" pillar candles from bulk wax (Thanks Tarkus! for teaching me how to do this)
I used aluminum beer cans and Pringles cans for molds (they worked great, both are easy to
peal after the candles cooled)
Made another 7 pillars from wax drippings and stubs. (used Pringles cans and nut cans)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Needleworking: Celtic knotwork embroidery around neckline and sleeves of a new T-tunic.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sewing: Made four Viking-style T-tunics. When I moved to Ansteorra from Trimaris I realized that
most of my garb didn't fit anymore or needed repairs.
I also have been working on curtain doorways throughout the apartment.
(Thanks Tarkus! for giving me the idea for this)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Woodworking: I've been redecorating my apartment with medieval style furniture and accessories.
All the woodworking has been peg-and-glue style construction. Here's what I've done so far:
Shelves : all around the kitchen to display bowls, plates, goblets and tankards.
Cabinet : 3.5'wide by 7.5' high with palisade-style front doors and brass hinges.
(Designed specifically to store/hide VCR tapes.)
Cabinet : with metal studs and brass hinges.
(Designed to hide the plastic wastecan in the kitchen.)
Sconces : several metal-studded wooden wall sconces for candles.
Table : small, by the sunny front window. I have my cat's (Tiki's) catnip plant on it.
Countertop : wooden-slat with metal studs around the edge. This slips over the formica
countertop in the kitchen.
Waxcatchers: with battlements. These go under various metal candlesticks that
I have so the wax doesn't get into the carpet.
Walls : 2 pallisade wall segments with battlements on top. (only 9 more to go!)
(to be used for medieval-looking demo booth)
Decoration : 1"x4"x4' board with carved celtic knotwork and morphs. Stained it dark walnut
then sanded off the stain from the reliefwork, then stained the relief part
in red oak. The contrast turned out very good, now I gotta find out what to
attach it to. :-)
