During the past decades we have been considering the best ways to teach a foreign language. The search still goes on, but unfortunately, we, as college, university, or high school teachers, do not feel satisfied with the results achieved in our classes. We keep struggling to find more effective methods and techniques for our various language courses. And here lies one of the most fascinating aspects of the teaching profession: the constant attempt to give our best to our students.
Despite our awareness of all the factors governing foreign language teaching, we sometimes tend to overlook some of them in our effort to emphasize others. Maybe the answer lies in considering every aspect and giving each one its due importance.
In this chapter we will be discussing – among other things – the relevant disciplines which underlie foreign language teaching and they way they affect this field. We will also analyse the characteristics of language teaching methodologies and learn to what extent they are influenced by their theoretical implications.
