Affixes
Affixes play a very important role in the Malay Language. The mastery of them will enable the users to write effective and very effective sentences to convey what they want to tell the readers.
So you should pay special attention to this item if you want to master the Malay language.
The are three groups of affixes, they are Awalan (Prefixes), Akhiran (Suffixes) and Apitan (Prefixes + Akhiran)
Prefixes
a) Prefix 'beR'
It is used to
i) show an action done upon oneself
Example: bersikat (to comb); berlari ( to run)
ii) show mutual or reciprocal action
Example: bertumbuk (to punch each other)
iii) show as a group
Example: berdua (both), bertiga (three of them)
iv) show passive sense
Example: berjahit (that has been sewed)
v) show the meaning of 'to use'
Example: berpayung (to use the umbrella)
vi) show the meaning of 'to ride on a bicycle, horse,etc)
Example: berkuda (to ride a horse)
vii) show the meaning of 'to bear/produce/lay)
Examples: berbunga (to bloom), berbuah (to bear fruit)
bertelur (to lay an egg)
viii) show the meaning of 'to manage a shop / to till a land)
Examples: berkedai (to run a shop) ; bersawah (to work on a
paddy field)
