The Stock Market Investor at

SUNCREST MIDDLE SCHOOL

Morgantown, West Virginia

In an elective math class called "Get Ahead Math" at Suncrest Middle School, students in the 7th and 8th grades are given $1000 at the beginning of each quarter to invest in common stock traded on the NYSE, the AMEX or the NASDAQ. Using the closing prices given by USA Today on the Internet, students track the daily price changes and record these changes on graph paper. Each student gathers basic financial information from newspapers, from stock market summaries provided by local stockbrokers, and occasionally from a local bank's investment broker. To access a daily quote from USA Today's Money Section a student needs only the ticker symbol for that company. The ticker symbol is available from any issue of USAToday on the Internet. Other basic information to be gathered is shown on the form below, which is provided to each student along with graph paper.
