Mosquitoes can be a problem in Crete but they don't seem to carry any diseases so they are more of a nuisance than anything else. It is said that they are more of a problem in Georgioupolis than most other places because it is marshy. The conventional way to avoid mosquito bites is a spray containing the chemical DEET which does the job. You can buy wipes too.

Hotels usually have round things you plug into the electrical socket on the wall. Look in the drawers or ask. You need to put a little pad containing chemical in it each day. The device warms it to release the chemical. You leave it on overnight. I don't think they like you to leave it on all day. You need to buy the pads yourself.

There are a number of unconventional ways if you don't like chemicals, but I don't know if they work.

• covering up at dusk and an hour after sunset or keeping windows closed: apparently this is when they are most active
• eating lots of B vitamins, can be found in Brewer's Yeast
• citronella: a pleasant citrus smell available in candles or an essential oil
• eating garlic
