WE have lost
track of JOHN and THOMAS RICHMOND b.c 1850s the children of JAMES RICHMOND,
who died 1909 in Burnham-on-Crouch mentioned these sons in his will which
left his oyster business to his eldest son, Alexander
Richmond.
James Richmond (b1819), master mariner then H.M.Customs Officer, and oyster merchant, married Eliza CRANMER of Mersea Island. Eliza was the daughter of Alexander Cranmer, publican, of Mersea Island. James and Eliza lived in Burnham, and Brighton, and probably other ports.
James Richmond and his brother Samuel (1820-23) both born Burnham, were the only known children of Samuel and Eliza Richmond. Probably the Samuel Richmond (mariner) , bc 1796 "of Burnham" who married 1815 to Eliza (NEWMAN? ) in Burnham.
This horn cup engraved (scrimshaw) with English hunting scenes and "RICHMOND"done around 1820-30. Proably this belonged to Samuel Richmond the father of James Richmond (b 1819) whose descendants have it.
Oil painting of Fanny Richmond ("bc 1795 Burnham"), painted c.1830 possibly by Sir John Gilbert a Royal Ademician, who died 1897. My great grandfather Henry James Richmond refused to take possession of this painting in 1930s. After the death of his father he had lived in Maldon with his gandfather Henry Harridance.
Fanny was the housekeeper of Henry Harridance (1793-1858) and his son Henry Harridance "The Younger" bc1826, of High Street, Maldon for at least 18 years from 1841. Fanny may well be the mother of "The Younger" Henry, as there is no record of a marriage of Henry Harridance in Essex or in England in Boyds indexes and no baptism of "The Younger". Henry owned a corn mill, 2 properties on High St and interest in at least one barge and partner in a boatbilding business with .
These heirlooms have been passed down through the descendants of James Richmond HM Customs Officer, mariner, oyster merchant.
Sarah Richmond, married in St Leonards Shorditch Nov.1829 James MASON and the witness for the bride was Fanny Richmond so she may well be the mother of Sarah.
